What is a traineeship?

Traineeships provide training relevant to the workplace that can be tailored to suit individual enterprises. Training is delivered through a partnership between BRACE, the employer and the employee and can be either on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both. All training is industry-endorsed and quality-accredited to a national standard.

How long does a traineeship last?

Training can be completed between 12 months and three years, depending on the employment status of the trainee (full time or part time).

What is the difference between a government-funded traineeship and a fee-for-service traineeship?

In some cases, the Commonwealth Government will fund in part or in full a traineeship for eligible trainees (unusually those who have been unemployed before being taken on as a trainee. These are known as funded traineeships. In other cases, where a trainee is not eligible for government assistance or a funded vacancy is not available with the training provider, the employer pays all costs. These are known as fee-for-service traineeships.

Why should I consider taking on a trainee?

A trainee can bring lots of benefits to a business. They can be trained from the outset to meet the specific requirements of your business. Employer incentives are available (subject to eligibility). Traineeships now apply to all ages. Training is designed to suit the trainee's learning style. Training is delivered in the workplace and is flexible according to specific needs.

Can an existing staff member become a trainee?

Yes, provided they meet the eligibility criteria. BRACE's staff can help employers and staff set up traineeship programs for existing staff as well as new staff.

What will it cost me to take on a trainee?

In some cases, it will not cost you anything. In fact, the government will pay you to employ a trainee. In other cases, the government will part-fund your training costs for eligible trainees. In a few cases, the employer will carry all costs. To find out more about the incentives available to employers, contact BRACE and talk with a traineeship officer.
