What is the NEW ENTERPRISE INCENTIVE SCHEME?

If you are unemployed but have an idea for a viable small business that you would like to get up and running, the NEIS program may be right for you. NEIS assists eligible unemployed people establish and manage new, commercially-viable businesses. The scheme is funded by the Commonwealth Government.

BRACE provides accredited small business training, business advice and mentoring for eligible job seekers, as well as ongoing income support for up to 52 weeks.

Am I eligible for NEIS?

Participants in the NEIS program must be registered with Centrelink, be at least 18 years old and be receiving an approved Centrelink allowance.

What will I learn as a NEIS participant?

Once enrolled, you will undertake a Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management), which will guide you in how to accomplish the following:

  • Research business opportunities
  • Establish business and legal requirements
  • Undertake financial planning
  • Promote the business
  • Undertake business planning
  • Profile the market
  • Analyse consumer behaviour for specific markets
  • Analyse and present research information
  • Co-ordinate business resources
  • Report on financial activity
  • How long will the training take?

The Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management) is offered over 6 weeks, usually two to three days a week. Classes run from 9:30am to 4:15pm.

I have a business idea. What more do I need to know before I join NEIS?

  • Consider the following questions in relation to your business idea:
  • Who are my customers and how will I reach them?
  • Have I tested my potential market?
  • Have I determined the resources I will require to operate my business?
  • How will I acquire those resources?
  • Have I investigated and determined my business' legal responsibilities?
  • Am I able to get insurance for my business?
  • How competitive is it to get into the NEIS program?

Competition for NEIS placements is tough. Interested persons must attend a one-hour information session, then complete a business proposal application form and attend an interview, where the viability of your potential business will be assessed and your eligibility will be determined. If you are deemed eligible, you will need to attend Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management) training and develop a business plan. This plan will be presented by you to BRACE's NEIS committee. The committee will assess your plan and recommend the businesses that are likely to be financially viable within 12 months and should benefit from NEIS income support. Successful applicants then sign a NEIS contract and payment of NEIS income support is granted for up to 12 months.
